Abstrak
Teaching is related to the learning process and testing is related to an evaluation process. Testing is to determine the achievement and progress of instruction. Testing and teaching are so closely interrelated that it is virtually impossible to work either field without being constantly concerned with the other. It can be seen that teaching learning activities can be considered successful since testing is aimed to determine the achievement of the objective of education. Teacher as a constructor of the test should construct a good test so that the test will be valid and reliable. Test that is made by the teacher called teacher made test. it is still to be questioned whether the test is valid and reliable or not because teacher rarely tried out the test first before giving it to the students. Knowing this fact, teacher should analyze the test so that the teacher will know the quality of the test. By analyzing the test, the teacher will know which item can be used or revised. The objectives of this research are (i) To know the extent of the item difficulties found in English Midterm test of the 8th grade at SMP 3 Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. (ii) To know the extent of the discrimination power of Multiple choice in English Midterm test of 8th grade at SMP 3 in the academic year 2011/2012 . This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative research .The data for this research were the item difficulties and discrimination power. To measure the purpose of the research, the data was analyzed by reading and studying the data that have been collected and identifying the item difficulties and discrimination power of the test. The result of the analysis showed that item difficulty in SMP 3 Kudus are good with level of difficulty value 0.20-0.70. The result in 8F class shown that most of items are categorized as medium easy test with 57,5% and for 8I class shown that most item are categorized as medium easy item test with 60% . Item discrimination of English Midterm Test that has been constructed by an English teacher of 8th grade in SMP 3 Kudus of 8F class is poor with discrimination value between 0.00-0.20 and the percentage around 57,5% so, for 8F class this items must be revised because it cannot separate the good students and the bad students. In the other hand, for 8I class the big number is 60% is categorized as poor item test with discrimination value 0.00 – 0.20, and those items test must be revised. Thus, the researcher concluded that the item difficulty and discrimination power of English midterm test in SMP 3 Kudus must be revised. Based on the result of research above, the researcher expects that An analysis of English Midterm Test that has been constructed by an English teacher of 8th grade in SMP 3 Kudus has good test based on the characteristics of a good test, good item difficulty but poor of discrimination power
