                    Abstrak

                    As a foreign language, speaking is to be a basic skill in communication. It is necessary to have clear understanding of the processes involved in speech. Speaking is one of the difficult skill because it focuses on how the students speak and communicate their ideas. For young learners, especially in SD N 05 Cendono get a problem about delivering their ideas. The students have difficulties to understand the materials. They just learn an abstract thing like concept, theory and method. They will get bored and they will not understand. They feel afraid and shy if they make a mistake. The objectives of the research are (1) To find out the speaking ability of the fifth grade students of SD N 05 Cendono in the academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning. (2) To find out the speaking ability of the fifth grade students of SD N 05 Cendono in the academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning. (3) To find out if there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the fifth grade student of SD N 05 Cendono in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning. The design of this research is experimental research with one group pretest and posttest. this research is conducted to the fifth grade tudents of SD N 05 Cendono with set of oral test. There are pretest and posttest. Both of them are used to gather the data of the the speaking ability of the fifth grade student of SD N 05 Cendono in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning. The result of this research shows that the pretest result can be categorized as “fair” by seeing the mean is 44.72 and the standard deviation is 7.78. Meanwhile the post test result is categorized as “sufficient” by seeing the mean is 65.97 and the standard deviation is 8.22. It means that There is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the fifth grade students of SD N 05 Cendono in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning with the level of significant 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 35 which gained from N-1. It finds that t-observation is higher than t-table (to = 5.53 > tt = 2.04). So, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis(Ha) is confirmed. The writer suggests for the teachers can use CTL as an effective method to teach. The teacher also have to manage or control the students’ activeness in doing everything in their environment. For students should not to shy and weak to speak up in front of their friends.
