                      Abstrak

                      Teaching English consists of four language skills. They are listening, reading, writing and speaking, but in teaching learning process the students of MA Miftahut Thullab felt bored to join speaking class. The reason is because the teacher always teaches using fill in dialogue and do conversation. Sometimes, the teacher asks the students to watch movie then the students retell that story in front of the class but the students are afraid to speak up in front of the class easily. On this condition, the writer tries to Conversational “Tennis” as the technique to teach speaking. The purpose is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using Conversational “Tennis”. This is a quantitative research. The method of the research is experimental. This design of the research is the experimental method which uses pretest and posttest. The population is the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab in the academic year 2012/2013. The total number of the population is 115 students. They are grouped into four classes. The sample is taken one class from the population by using cluster random sampling through lottery. The data were taken from the spoken test. After the students were given the pretest, they were given the treatment for six meeting. The treatment relies on the material that is taken from the syllabus of the school. Then, the data were analyzed using the t-test method to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using Conversational “Tennis”. The result of the research, the mean of pretest is 70.48 and the mean of posttest is 78.96. It can be concluded that the t-observation 27.765 in the level of significance = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 29 which is gained from N-1, the t-table is 2.05. Thus, H0 is denied and Ha is confirmed. So, the hypothesis states, “There is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the eleventh grade of MA Miftahut Thullab in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using Conversational “Tennis” is confirmed. Because the use of Conversational “Tennis” in teaching speaking shows good results, the English teacher of Senior High School should use the technique of Conversational “Tennis” to teach English on the other skills. In fact, Conversational “Tennis” technique can motivate the students to speak easily.
