Abstrak

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand information in a text and interpret it appropriately. In Senior High School curriculum, reading is one of the competence standards conducted to the students. There are some materials of reading English text that is taught at SMA N 1 Karangrayung Purwodadi, one of them is narrative text. Most of the students say that reading is difficult and so many kinds of texts must be learned by them. Narrative text is a text that has purpose to entertain or amuse the reader or listener that contains for three basic generic structures. It is difficult enough for students, especially for the tenth grade students. Using comic strip as media in teaching and learning process is expected to stimulate the students’ interest in having habit of reading. The students will be able to understand the plot the comic, because it is completed by pictures that show the action of the sentence being read. The objective of the research is to improve the reading comprehension of narrative text by using comic strip for the Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 1 Karangrayung Purwodadi in the academic year 2011/2012. This research applied a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It is one of kind of research that is done by teacher in the class. It consists of four stages. These are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of the research is the tenth grade students of X-C class of SMA N 1 Karangrayung Purwodadi in academic year 2011/2012. The data of this research was taken from the result of comprehension test and the check list of observation sheet of those three cycles conducted. In the result, the reading comprehension of narrative text of the tenth grade students improves from cycle I until cycle III. In cycle I, the average score of the reading comprehension of narrative text is 73.68 as sufficient category with 31 (81,58 %) students who could reach the KKM. In cycle II, the average score of the reading comprehension of narrative text is 82.89 as good category with 36 (94,74 %) who could reach the KKM. In cycle III, the average score of the reading comprehension of narrative text is 87.89 as excellent category with 38 students (100%) who could reach the KKM. This research comes to the conclusion that the comic strip as medium can improve the reading comprehension of narrative text for the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karangrayung Purwodadi in academic year 2011/2012. Thus, the writer suggest that a teacher should be creative, active, and always give motivation and support to the students in order to create good learning experience by using comic strip as medium in teaching reading.
