Abstrak
Syntax is the relationship of words in sentence and the relationship between sentence and sentence structure. The correlation between the word and another word will form phrase, clause, and sentence. One of song writers, Maher Zain, writes the song lyrics in the “Thank You Allah” album. “Thank You Allah” album is a song album that conveys about religious and spirit and in the song lyrics I find some sentences to be analyzed. This research is aimed at knowing (i) the types of sentence in the English song lyrics of Thank You Allah album by Maher Zain, and (ii) syntactical rules in the English song lyrics of “Thank You Allah” album by Maher Zain. This is a qualitative descriptive research. The data were collected by searching and collecting one album of Maher Zain songs and Maher Zain song lyrics, and listening and comparing the songs and song lyrics to get authentic data sources. The result of the analysis of types of sentence in the English song lyrics of Thank You Allah album by Maher Zain shows that there are 144 declarative sentences, 15 interrogative sentences, 1 exclamatory sentences, and 23 imperative sentences. Almost sentences used in the song lyrics are declarative sentences. So, the sentences used in the song lyrics state a statement and give the information to the listeners about the truth. The result of analysis of syntactical rules in the English song lyrics of Thank You Allah album are so many syntactical rules of the sentences in the English song lyrics. The most dominant rule is NP=N. There are 270 rules of NP=N in the declarative sentences, 36 rules of NP=N in the imperative sentences, 21 rules of NP=N in the interrogative sentences and 1 rule of NP=N in the exclamatory sentence. So, the English song lyrics have many single nouns that have function as subject, direct object or indirect object of the sentences. Due to the fact that syntax is a point that is discussed in the grammar, I suggest to the students of English Education Department should not only know the types of sentence but also they should know the purpose of sentences and the implicit meaning of the sentences. The English teacher should teach the types of sentence and the purpose of sentences. So, the students will not only know the types of sentence but also they will know the purpose of the sentences because every sentence has different purpose in it. The students of English Education Department should learn more about the syntactical rules of the sentences in many sources because sometimes when the sentence has type with the other sentence; they will have different syntactical rules. The English teacher should use many references to teach the students about syntactical rules. So, the students will get many information or knowledge about syntactical rules.
