Abstrak

information. Reading is one of skill of English. Reading comprehension means the ability to read the text, to understand the content of the text, and to get information from the text. Reading should get more attention because there are many students who get difficulties in comprehending English text. The English teacher should be creative to choose kind of technique in teaching reading. Hopefully, the students can comprehend English text easily. Numbered Heads Together technique is one of teaching technique which can be a consideration for English teacher in teaching reading because the students are involved in reviewing the material covered in the lesson and in checking their understanding of lesson content. The purpose of this research is to find out if there is significant difference between reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Three Phase Technique. The population of this research is eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012. This research is an experimental research. The writer uses the design of control group. The experimental group is used to find out reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 who are taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and control group is used to find out reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 who are taught by using Three Phase Technique. Based on the analyzing data, it was found that reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 taught by using Numbered Heads Togeher (NHT) is categorized excellent. The mean is 85.65 and the standard deviation is 10.36. While, reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 taught by using Three Phase Technique is categorized good. The mean is 78.96 and the standard deviation is 10.47. Moreover, the calculation of t-observation (t_o) is 2.76 and in the level significant 0.05, t-table (t_t) is 1.99. Because t-observation (t_o) is higher that t-table (t_t) (t_o > t_t), it means that there is significant difference between reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2011/2012 taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Three Phase Technique. Based on the result of this research, the writer suggests that the English teacher should use Numbered Heads Together as kind of teaching technique, especially in teaching reading because it can give positive effect for the students. It can encourage mutual helpfulness in the groups and the active participation of the students.
