Syafei, M.Pd (ii) DiahKurniati, S.Pd, M.Pd Key words: Writing, Descriptive Text, Clustering Technique Writing is an activity which expresses knowledge, idea, and feeling in form of text so that the result can be enjoyed and understood by the readers.Writing should get more attention because there are many students who get difficulties in making text, especially descriptive text. The English teacher should be creative to choose kind of technique in teaching writing. Hopefully, the students can make a descriptive text easily. Clustering technique is one of teaching techniques which can be a consideration for English teacher in teaching writing becauseclustering is a way of prewriting that can be used of students to develop, organize or collecting ideas and finding direction in writing easily by using circles and lines. The purpose of this research is to find out if there is significant difference between the writing ability of descriptive texts of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before and after taught by using Clustering Technique. The design of this research is experimental research. The writer uses one group pre-test post-test. The population of the research is the eighth grade students of SMP 1 JatiKudus in academic year 2012/2013. In taking the sample of the research, the writer uses cluster random sampling technique. The writer gets VIIIF with the number of students 34 as the sample of the research. Based on the analyzing data, it was found that the writing ability of descriptive texts of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before being taught by using Clustering Technique was categorized sufficient. The mean is 65.52 and the standard deviation is 8.78. While, the writing ability of descriptive texts of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 after being taught by using Clustering Technique was categorized good. The mean is 77.44 and the standard deviation is 7.79. Moreover, the calculation of t-observation (t_o) is 5.71 and in the level significant 0.05, t-table (t_t) is 2.04. Because t-observation (t_o) is higher than t-table (t_t) (t_o>t_t), it means that there is significant difference between the writing ability of descriptive texts of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before and after taught by using Clustering Technique. Based on the result of this research, it means that Clustering Technique can be effective in teaching writing. Therefore, the writer suggests that the English teacher should apply Clustering Technique as an alternative technique in teaching process. ABSTRAKSI Jannah, Intan Noor. 2013. Rancanganpenelitianiniadalahpenelitianeksperimental.Penulismenggunakansatukelompokbentuk pre-test post-test.Populasipenelitianiniadalahkelas VIII SMP 1 Jati Kudus tahunajaran 2012/2013.Dalampengambilan sample penelitianini, penulismenggunakanteknik cluster random sampling. Penulismendapatkankelas VIIIF denganjumlahsiswa 34 sebagai sample penelitian. Berdasarkananalisis data, ditemukanbahwakemampuanmenulisteks descriptive kelas VIII SMP 1 Jati Kudus tahunajaran 2012/2013 sebelumdiajarmenggunakanteknik Clustering dapatdikategorikan “cukup”. Nilai rata-rata kelasadalah 65.52 danstandardefiasinyaadalah 8.78.Sedangkankemampuanmenulisteks descriptive kelas VIII SMP 1 Jati Kudus sesudahdiajarmenggunakanteknikClusteringdapatdikategorikan “bagus”. Nilai rata-rata kelasadalah 77.44 danstandardefiasinyaadalah 7.79.Disampingitu, t-observation (t_o) adalah 5.71 danpada level signifikan 0.05, t-table (t_t) adalah 2.04.Karena t-observation (t_o) lebih tinggi daripada t-table (t_t) (t_o>t_t), itu berarti ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuanmenulisteks descriptive kelas VIII SMP 1 Jati Kudus tahunajaran 2012/2013 sebelumdansesudahdiajarmenggunakanteknikClustering. Berdasarkanhasilpenelitianini, berartibahwateknikClusteringefektifdalampengajaranmenulis. Olehkarenaitu, penulismenyarankankepada guru BahasaInggrissebaiknyamenerapkanteknik Clustering sebagaisebuahteknikalternatifdalam proses pengajaran.
