Abstrak

Writing is one of four language skills that should be taught to the students. This skill should be mastered by the students because it can be used to express the student’s ideas as well as feelings, and to communicative with others. In Senior High School curriculum, writing is one of the competence standards conducted to the students. There are some materials of writing English text that is taught at MAN 2 Kudus, one of them is descriptive text. Most of the students say that writing is difficult and so many kinds of texts must be learned by them Descriptive text is a text that has purpose to describe a particular things, person or place. It is difficult enough for students, especially for the tenth grade students. Using Jigsaw technique in teaching and learning process is expected to stimulate the students’ interest in composing a text. Considering writing is complex, jigsaw is to develop team work and cooperative learning skill within all students. Cooperative learning helps students to work together. The students will be easier in making a text. It is because they will have discussed with their friends in expert and home groups. The objective of the research is to improve the writing skill of descriptive text by using jigsaw technique for the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. This research applied a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It is one of kind of research that is done by teacher in the class. It consists of four stages. These are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of the research is the tenth grade students of X-5class of MAN 2 Kudus in academic year 2011/2012. The data of this research was taken from the result of writing test. In cycle I, the average score of the writing ability of descriptive text is 74.97 as sufficient category with 24 (57.14%) students who could reach the KKM. In cycle II, the average score of the writing ability of descriptive text is 82.83 as good category with 42 (100 %) who could reach the KKM. In cycle III, the average score of the writing ability of descriptive text is 87.09 as excellent category with 42 students (100%) who could reach the KKM. This research comes to the conclusion that the jigsaw technique can improve the writing ability of descriptive text for the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Kudus in academic year 2011/2012. Thus, the writer suggest that a teacher should be creative, active, and always give motivation and support to the students and may modify this technique in such a way so that it will be appropriate in teaching and learning process.
