Keywords: Speaking Skill, Task Based Learning. English as one of the international languages is very important since it is bridging of communication among people in different countries. In Indonesia, English is taught in elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools. The language skills to be achieved are divided into four; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Speaking as one of the four major skills in English is an important skill. This research is aimed at knowing the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA1 Mejoo Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using Task Based Learning. This research is a quantitative experimental research. The data were collected by recording. Instrument of the research is oral test. The researcher gave pre test before being taught by using Task Based Learning and gave post test after being taught by using Task Based Learning. The sample of the research count of thirty four students from XI IPS 1. The sample is divided by using cluster random sampling. The result of this research can be seen from the pre test and the post test result. The pre test result of the mean is 60.91and standard deviation is 5.65. It means that the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before being taught by using Task Based Learning is sufficient. Meanwhile, the post test result the mean is 71.14 and standard deviation is 7.2. So, the result of the speaking ability after being taught by using Task Based Learning of the eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 is good. The Hypothesis is confirmed in the level significance 0,05(5%) is 1.694 and the degree of freedom (N-1)= 33 shows that there is significant difference between the speaking ability of eleventh grade students of SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using Task Based Learning. The result of t0 (12.034) is higher than t- table (1.694). Therefore, it can be concluded that the Null hypothesis is denied, while the alternative hypothesis of the research is confirmed. In this research, the researcher suggeststhe English teachers use Task Based Learning as a teaching method to improve students speaking ability. Diantaranya, mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca dan menulis.Berbicara adalah salah satu dari empat kemampuan dasar yang sangat penting. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas sebelas SMA 1 Mejobo Kudus tahun ajaran 2012/2013 sebelum dan setelah menggunakan Task Based Learning. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen kuantitative. Data diperoleh dari rekaman. Instrumen dari penelitian adalah test secara oral. Peneliti memberikan pre test sebelum menggunakan Task Based Learning dan memberi post test setelah menggunakan Task Based Learning. Sampel penelitian sebanyak tigapuluh empat siswa dari XI IPS 1. Sample didapat menggunakan cara pengacakan kelas. Hasildaripenelitianinidapatdilihatdarihasilpre testdanpost test. Hasilpre test, nilai rata-rata (mean) = 60.91danstandatdeviasi = 5.65. Jadi, hasildarikemampuanberbicarapadasiswakelassebelas SMA 1 Mejobo Kudustahunpelajaran 2012/2013 sebelumdiajarkanmenggunakan task based learning adalahcukup. Sementaraitu, padahasilpost test, nilai rata-rata (mean) = 71.14danstandatdeviasi = 7.2. Jadi, hasildarikemampuanberbicarapadasiswakelassebelas SMA 1 Mejobo Kudustahunpelajaran 2012/2013 sesudahdiajarkanmenggunakan task based learning adalahbaik. Hipotesispadatingkatsignifikan 0.05 (5%) = 1.694 dantingkatkebebasan (N-1) = 33, menunjukkanbahwaadaperbedaanantarakemampuanberbicarasiswakelassebelas SMA 1 Mejobo Kudustahunpelajaran 2012/2013 sebelumdansesudahdiajarkanmenggunakan task based learning. Hasil t0 (12.034) lebihtinggidari t-tabel (1.694).Olehkarenaitu, dapatdikatakanbahwa null hipotesisditolak, sementaraalternatifhipotesisditerima. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menyarankan kepada guru bahasa Inggris untuk menggunakan Task Based Learning sebagai metode pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa.Siswa harus lebih percaya diri dan jangan takut membuat kesalahan ketika berbicara di depan kelas.
