Abstrak

Studying literature connected with our daily life, such as type messages, reading novels, write letters, read and understanding lyrics of the songs, etc.All of that contains figurative languages, it can make us difficult in understanding the text if we don’t know the meaning. Based on the explanation above, the objective of the research are to find out the types and describe the meaning of figurative language found in selected song lyrics by Twenty One Pilots. The writer used descriptive qualitative research. It is used to find out the types of figurative language used in selected song lyrics by Twenty One Pilots. The writer used document as a way to collect the data. The writer analyzed the selected song lyrics by Twenty One Pilots and collect the figurative languages were found.Then, the writer analyzed the meaning of figurative language found in selected song lyrics. After that, the data is interpreted into the result. The result of this research shows that there were 41 figurative languages found in selected song lyrics by Twenty One Pilots. The writer found 9 metaphor, 1 simile, 11 personification, 3 metonymy, 8 symbol, 1 paradox, 6 hyperbole, 1 understatement, and 1 irony. By the types, the dominant figurative language is personification with 11 in totals. It is also have different meaning for each sentences.The writer conclude that Twenty One Pilots trying to give the life value through the songs. Twenty One Pilots also give many message that related to the singer’s experiences. At the end of this research, the writer suggest that students can pay more attention to the English subject, especially in literature. It is fun when you understanding the meaning of your favorite songs.The writer expected that this research can help the readers in understanding and improving their knowledge about figurative language.
