Abstrak

Reading is an important skill for language learning, especially in non-English speaking countries like Indonesia. Many students were bored and unmotivated to read during the teaching and learning process. There are many factors influencing students’ motivation to read. Students must be motivated and know the factors to increase their desire to read. The aim of this research is to investigate the reading motivation in English texts and to figure out the factors influence reading motivation in English texts at SMK Islam Al Hikmah Jepara. This research used descriptive qualitative research design, with data collection methods using adopted questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Furthermore, the subjects of this research is the tenth grade students at SMK Islam Al Hikmah Jepara in academic year 2021/2022. This research use MRQ (Motivation for Reading Questionnaire) adapted by Wang & Guthrie (2004) which distributed to 34 participants. In addition, semi-structured interview were conducted on 5 students to get more information. The result of this research shows the students’ reading motivation of X OTKP I are in the medium level of category or in the middle between high and low motivation in reading English text because more students had average level in reading. Beside, the factor influence reading motivation are intrinsic and extrinsic. The students more extrinsically motivated especially in grades. They read because of assessed by the teacher and they want to get good grades. The researcher also find that the students are in intrinsically motivated especially in involvement. They enjoy read because they like the topics. To help students improved their reading motivation, students can read interesting text such as reading novel, story book, fairytale, etc. It will be better if the teacher can enrich text resources by considering student reading preference. So, the students can read more often. For further researcher, it is recommended to upgrade the data resources because this present research is lack of data resources.
