                    Abstrak

                    Retelling story is an essential ability to support the speaking skill. In retelling story, the writer uses retelling story rope to help the students in expressing the meaning of simple short narrative text. Based on the data that the writer get in preliminary test, their mean only 65,41. It seems that 82,4% of them are under of the KKM and only 17.6% who pass the KKM and for the KKM in SMP N 1 Jati is 76. In this research, the writer is interested in doing the research entitled “Improving Speaking Ability of the Ninth Grade Students of SMP N 1 Jati Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014 by Retelling Story”. The objectives of this research are to describe how retelling story can improve speaking ability of the ninth grade students at SMP N 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 and to find out the students responses in retelling story of the ninth grade students at SMP N 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. The writer conducted Classroom Action Research to solve the research problem. This research is done with collaborative with the English teacher. The research is conducted in ninth grade of SMP N 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014, especially in IXF. The number of the students in the classroom is 34 students. The writer used oral test and observation sheets as instrument to gather the data. The average score percentage of the students’ speaking ability in narrative text in preliminary test is 65.41 %. In cycle 1 is 74,94 %. In cycle II, the average score is 79,41%. So, there is an improvement of the average score percentage of the speaking ability in the first and second cycle. The problem also faced by the writer is decreased in each cycle. Based on the result above, the writer can conclude that retelling story can improve the speaking ability of ninth grade students of SMP N 1 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 and the responses of the students is good. The suggestions from the writer is supposed to the teacher to use retelling story technique as an alternative way and for the students to accustom their habit in retelling story by using English language and for the further researcher can develop this research to make the betterment.
