Abstrak
Code mixing appears when people combine two languages, usually between their mother tongue and English or another language, without changing the function of the sentence. Code-mixing is one of the most common linguistic phenomena in everyday life in this era. Code-mixing can occur anywhere, especially on campus. In general, students come from various regions. Therefore, students can interrupt the code when communicating by mixing their native language with other languages. Sometimes the students also mix their languages when they do presentations in the classroom. This research aims to answer two research questions, they are: (1) What types of code mixing do the EED students use when they perform the presentations in literature and language teaching class? (2) Why do the EED students use code-mixing in their presentations in the literature and language teaching class?. This research used a qualitative research design. The instruments of this research are observation and interview. There are 15 participants from 6th-semester students of the English Education Department, Universitas Muria Kudus. The result showed that there are three types of code mixing that are used by EED students’ Presentations that is an insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The most common code mixing used by EED students' presentations is Insertion. There are 18 utterances classified as insertion, 8 classified as alternation, and only 1 classified as congruent lexicalization. While, the reasons for EED students that used code mixing during their presentation majority because of the situation, there are some reasons because of lack of vocabulary, and there is only 1 reason because of prestige. From the results of this research, It is suggested that students should pay more attention to formal situations in presentations to use code-mixing and enrich their vocabulary so that code-mixing does not occur in presentations.
