Abstrak
Writing is one of important skill for the students at Junior High School. The students get difficulties in finding and organizing ideas to start their writing. One of the materials which are taught in the eighth grade of Junior High School is genre. Recount is one of genre that tells about past activities/ events when they have occured. Digital storytelling media is one of audio visual media that is used the teacher to introduce and present the content, organization and the grammatical feature of recount text, since recount texts consist of series of events or experiences in the past, usually in the order they occurred. In this research, the writer used written recount text test to measure SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus students in writing. The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is any significant difference between the ability of writing recount text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using digital storytelling. This is an experimental research. This research took place at SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus. The population was the eighth grade of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus students in the academic year 2013/2014. The writer takes one class as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The writer got VIII C; consists of 30 students. The writer gave written test by giving pre-test and post-test. The result of the ability of writing recount text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in academic year 2013/2014, the mean of pre-test is 63,9 and the mean of post-test is 79.5. It’s concluded that t-observation is 8,54 in the level of significance (α) = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 29 which is gained from N-1, the t-table is 2.05. Thus, Ho is denied and Ha is confirmed. So the hypothesis state, “there is any significant difference between the ability of writing recount text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus before and after being taught by using digital storytelling in academic year 2013/2014” is confirmed. The writer hopes this research can be used by the teacher as one way to enrich the reference about improving the students’ writing skill in the eighth grade students, and also as a consideration for the teacher to choose digital storytelling as an alternative media to help and make the students write recount text easily.
