                    Abstrak

                    This study was conducted under the considerations that the fifth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus need a media that can motivate and attract the students’ interest in learning English, so it is expected that the vocabulary mastery of the students can improve. The objective of this research is to find out whether comic can improve the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. The design of this research is an action research, in collecting primary data, the writer carried out two cycles. The writer designed learning activity using comic book, with combining a story telling and games in the first cycle and story telling with role-play in the second cycle. Assessment test was also given at the end of each activity in every cycle. It is used to measurewhether the student’s vocabulary mastery is improving or not after treatments. And the subject of the research is the fifth grade student of SD Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 of “A classes” that amount to thirty students. After analyzing and calculating the data, the result of this research showed that the students’ progress in vocabulary mastery was really good. There is an improvement after being taught by using comic book. It was confirmed by the significant result of the test. The average achievement of the students was 63.73% at the pre-cycle, 76.83% at the first cycle and 80.5% at the second cycle. The main factor that caused this improvement was there is a motivation of the students to learn English by using comic book. Eventually, based on the result of the research, using comic book in teaching English vocabulary is recommended for English teacher, especially for the elementary school teacher, to attract the students’ interest and motivate the students in learning English, as well as to improve the vocabulary mastery of the students. This result hopefully would become a reference to the English teacher, toenrich theknowledge,in order to improvethe level of educationinIndonesia.
