Abstrak

For learning English, knowing vocabulary is very important. How English is being taught to students as a global language has been the subject of many studies. Although English is a universal language, some countries still have prohibitions on teaching English as a non-native language. The problem of this research is if the use of Duolingo to teach vocabulary to tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Kudus in the 2023/2024 academic year gives a significant difference in vocabulary learning. This study is using Duolingo application as a vocabulary teaching tool for tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Kudus to find a significant difference in vocabulary between before and after. This is an experimental study with one group pretest and postest. This study explores the difference in students' vocabulary before and after being taught using Duolingo. Only one class in this study as respondents received the treatment as part of this design. The sig (2-tailed) value obtained is 0.00, which is less than 0.05, therefore there is a significant difference. As a result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, there is a difference between the two values. It is proved that Duolingo is effective to teach vocabulary for tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Kudus. Df (Degrees of Freedom) found 35 with a significance value (α/2) of 0.05/2 is 0.025. The t-table value is 2030. The t-test value (14.373) is higher than the t-table (2030). The sig value (2-tailed) shows sig (0.000) lower than sig α (0.05). This means that (Ha) is accepted and teaching using Duolingo is more effective than the conventional method.
