Key Words: vocabulary mastery, PQ4R technique The English learners must be capable in four language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Beside that, learners must master some language component. One of the language components is vocabulary. The learners cannot say or write anything without knowing English vocabulary. Mastering English vocabulary will help learners easier in studying English. However, the problem of English vocabulary mastery is still found. It also happen in the eighth grade students of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus in academic year 2012/2013. One of the teaching techniques can be used to teach vocabulary is PQ4R technique. This research is aimed to test the significance of the difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using PQ4R technique. The design of this research is experimental research. The population was the whole students of the eighth grade of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus in academic year 2012/2013, and then the writer took the sample by cluster random sampling technique through lottery. VIII A class was chose as the sample of the research. The writer gave pretest before being taught by using PQ4R technique and posttest after being taught by using PQ4R technique to the students. To test the significance of the difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using PQ4R technique, the writer used the t-test formula. The result of the pretest shows that the highest score of the students is 73 and the lowest score is 45. While the calculation result of the mean is 55.85 and Standard Deviation (SD) is 7.33. It indicates that the students have sufficient vocabulary mastery. However, the data of the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus after being taught by using PQ4R technique (posttest) shows that the mean is 76.97 and the Standard Deviation is 9.54. It can be categorized as good. Based on the calculation of t-test, the t-observation (to) is 11.49. While, in the level of significance (α) 5%, the degree of freedom (df) 33 shows t-table (tt) is 2.042. Because of t-observation is higher than t-table (to= 11.49 > tt= 2.042), the writer concludes that there is significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Hasyim Asyari 2 Kudus in academic year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using PQ4R technique. As the suggestion, teacher may use PQ4R technique in teaching English vocabulary because it is proved that it can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
