Keywords: Writing, Narrative Text, Story Mapping. Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. To write well, we must have good capabilities in writing process and aspects of writing. We must be able to organize the idea, to construct the sentence, to use punctuation and spelling well. Mastering writing needs a lot of practice. Without practice writing will be difficult. Story maps are interactive maps combined with text and other content to tell a story about the world. The Story Mapping is a helpful media that can develop the students’ criticism, it also trained them to think systematically. The story mapping could play a key role in helping students analyze the elements of the story. This research has a purpose to find out the answer from the statement of the problem, is there is any significant difference between the ability in writing narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Gebog Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 between before and after being taught by using story mapping. This is quantitative research. The method of the research is experiment. This design of the study is the quasi-experimental method with giving pre-test and posttest to know the ability in writing narrative text of the students. The data were taken from the written test. The total population is 294 students of the tenth grade. This research applied a cluster random sampling technique to get samples. The total sample is 32 students from the same class, X-8 class. After the students were given the pre-test, they were given the treatment for six meeting. The giving of the treatment relies on the material that taken from the syllabus of the school. Then, the data were analyzed using the t-test method to find out whether there is any significant difference between the ability in writing narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Gebog Kudus in between before and after being taught by using story mapping. The research result, the mean of pre-test is 67.5 and the mean of posttest is 80,5. It means that there is any significant difference between before and after being taught by using story mapping. Besides, it can also be concluded that the t-observation (to) value is 4.961 in the level of significance (α) = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 31, the t-table is 2.04 or (4.961>2.04). So the t-observation is higher than t-table. Thus, H0 is denied and confirm the Ha. So, the hypothesis that states, “There is a significant difference of the ability in writing narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA 1 Gebog Kudus between before and after being taught by using story mapping” is confirmed. Because the use of story mapping in teaching writing narrative text shows good result, the English teacher of senior high school is recommended to use story mapping technique in teaching writing, particularly in narrative text, because this technique could improve students’ comprehension in writing narrative text and help the students arranged a narrative text in a chronological order. In addition, story map could increase students’ vocabulary. And for the next researcher, here they are suggested to prepare a good planning before conducting a similar study in order to make the implementation of Story Mapping technique runs well.
