Key Words: Reading Comprehension and Summarizing Technique. Reading is one of the important skills in teaching English. By reading, the reader can understand well about the message of the text and convey orally. Reading also helps the reader to find information quickly. The eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong Pati have difficulties in reading comprehension. Criteria of Minimal Score (KKM) of the eighth grade are 75. Meanwhile, the students’ average score are 65, it is under of KKM. Based on the fact, the researcher is eager to help them through summarizing technique to improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong Pati in the academic year 2013/2014. This action research aim is to describe whether summarizing technique can improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong Pati in academic year 2013/2014. The researcher conducted classroom action research to solve the research problem. The research was conducted in the eighth A grade students of MTs N Gembong Pati in the first semester of academic year 2013/2014. The number of the students in the classroom was 25 students; 20 female and 5 male. This research consists of two cycles and each of cycles has the instrument. They are: observation and test. Besides that, the researcher also applied the research design in every cycle as follows: planning, action, observation, analysis and reflection. The findings of the research showed that in the pre-cycle the average score was 66.08 and the average score percentage was 66.08% as fair categorized. In cycle I, the average score of reading test increased that were 73.28 and the average scores percentage was 73.28% as good categorized. In cycle II, the average scores of reading test increased that were 82.72 and the average score percentage were 82.72% as good categorized improvement determined of this research. The students’ improvement got scores under from 66.08% in pre-cycle, 73.28% in cycle I, and 82.72% in cycle II. Here, the optimal result was gained. There is an improvement of the students’ activity in teaching reading comprehension through summarizing technique in every cycle. In cycle I, the teacher use summarizing technique to do the exercise in individually. In cycle II, the teacher use summarizing technique to do exercise in pairs, to quickly find main idea in reading learning activities made the students enthusiasm to follow in reading activities. Seriousness when being involved in reading activities and in doing the reading skill test was clearly in view. With high motivation, the students were relax and had fun to get involved in the reading activities. Summarizing technique can improve the reading comprehension of the students, so it is suggested that the English teacher better uses summarizing technique as an alternative in teaching learning process to improve students’ reading skill. In addition, the students should practice more in increasing their knowledge; especially in reading comprehension through summarizing technique in very well.
