Abstrak

Commissives are kind of speech act that speaker use to commit themselves to some future action. Comprehension about commissives in communicated is very important, because communication about future will be successful when there is no misinterpretation between speaker and hearer. Besides in script movie or novel, commissives can be found in Quran. Quran is God’s Message which is contains the expression and explanation of His Law, and the humans are important to know and study about it. Those are why the writer conducts this research. The objectives of the research can be further detailed as the following: (1) to describe the classifications of commissives in English translation of Quran surah An-Nisa’ and (2) to know the function of commissives in English translation of Quran surah An-Nisa’. The design of the study is descriptive qualitative research. It describes commissives found in English translation of surah An-Nisa’ in Quran. This research aimed to find out classifications of commissives in English translation of surah An-Nisa’ in Quran, and also it describes the functions of commissives in English translation of surah An-Nisa’ in Quran. This research uses the descriptive qualitative research because it does not use research data such as number. The result of this research are: (1) the classifications of commissives found in English translation of Quran surah An-Nisa’ are: 5 guaranteeing, 2 offering, 16 promising, 3 swearing, 23 threating, 12 vowing. So, it can concluded that the dominan commissives which are used in English translation of surah An-Nisa’ in Quran is threatening commissives and the minor commissives is offering commissives and (2) the functions of commissives in English translation of Quran surah An-Nisa’ are: 5 function of guaranteeing, 2 function of offering, 16 function of promising, 3 function of swearing, 23 function of threatening, 12 function of vowing. So, the theory of commissives from Searle on 1975 is relevant with the result of commissives found in English translation of Quran surah An-Nisa’. This research provides several suggestions. They are: (1) For the students, they are suggested to improve their knowledge about commissives. They can analyze commissives in many kinds of text such as script movie, novel or Holy book etc. to develop their understanding. (2) For the lecturers, they are suggested to use interesting and entertaining media such as Holy book, script movie, script speech, novel, etc. in teaching. (3) For the further researchers, they are suggested to continue to conduct the research about commissives, because there are many areas which are possible to be researched.
