                    Abstrak

                    Speaking is the ability to express feelings, ideas, concepts, wishes, opinion or arguments, and so on thought oral sequences. Speaking is one of the skills which must be taught in Senior High School. So, the students should speak English fluently. But, In fact the eleventh grade students of SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus have difficulties to speak actively in English. They are lack of vocabulary and confidence to speak up. Based on the conversation with the English teacher, the students’ scores of speaking skill are still low and still under KKM. To solve this problem, the writer used buzz group in teaching English to improve their speaking skill. The objectives of this research are to find out whether buzz group can improve students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 and to describe the effectiveness of the buzz group as a technique to improve students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. Buzz group is a small group of people that is divided from a larger group who are given an assignment to complete in a short time period. This technique can help the students improve their speaking skill. This is a classroom action research. The research is conducted in SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014, especially in the eleventh Grade Students of XI Tehnik Otomotif. The number of student in this research is 23 students. In this research, the writer used observation sheet to know the teacher’s and the students’ activity in teaching English by using buzz group. The writer also used test to know the level of students’ speaking skill. The result of the test showed that students’ score in cycle I was 69.64. It means that the test was not successful. In cycle II, the result of the test was 76.73. It means there was an increase and the score pass the KKM. The result of the students’ achievement test from cycle I to cycle II was increase 7.09. From the observation sheet, the writer knew that the students enjoyed doing discussion by using Buzz Group technique and made them easier to produce their idea. They became more enthusiastic in the class. So, the writer concludes that buzz group can improve students’ speaking skill and this technique is effective in teaching speaking. The suggests also suggest that the implementation of using buzz group as technique in teaching speaking should be conducted by the teacher in a creative way and always support the students in teaching learning process. And the students should practice speaking by using buzz group regularly and continually in order to speak fluently.
