Abstrak

Speaking is the most important skill that should be mastered by the language learners. The language learners should be able to speak in English fluently and well because spoken language as the prime channel of communication in language. However, they get difficulty to improve their speaking skill because there are accustomed to use their native language in their daily activities than using English. It also occurs in the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 exactly in language class, the students had difficulties in practicing speaking,some of the students are afraid to speak actively, especially when the teacher asked them to memorize the story then spoke about it. The appropriate technique in teaching speaking is needed to improve the students speaking skill. One of the teaching techniques is English contest in class. The objectives of this research are (1)to find out if English contest in class can improve the speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. (2) To get information about the respond of the students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 by using English contest in class. The writer did the research for the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. The design of the research is classroom action research.This research consists of two cycles and each of cycles has the instrument. They are: observation and test. Besides that, the writer also applied the research design in every cycle as follows: planning, action, observation, analysis and reflection. The average score of the students’ speaking skill in cycle I is 78.75 (78.75%). In cycle II, the average score of the students’ speaking skill is 83.15(83.15%).There is an improvement of the students’ activity in teaching English by using English contest in class in every cycle. In cycle I, some of the students looked talked with their friends in class. When they were ordered by the teacher to come forward and retell the story of narrative text in front of class, a student came forward to practice though she was so nervous. In cycle II, the students are not afraid and shy anymore to retell a story of narrative text in front of class. The studentsenthusiasm to follow the lesson, they looked enjoyed during teaching and learning process. English contest in class can improve the speaking ability of the student, so it is suggested that the English teacher used English contest in class as the alternative teaching technique in teaching English to improve students’ speaking skill. English contest in class given some opportunities to the students to use their language. It is an English teaching technique emerged to encourage the students to speak up in a fun way.
