                    Abstrak

                    Writing is one of the language skills in English subject. One of the writing competences which should be learnt by the students are to create monologoe text in form of narrative, report, and analytical exposition. Narrative text is one of the monologue text that should be learnt by the students. The fact shows thatthe teacher seldom use media in teaching writing, the students find some difficulties and need much time to write monologue text. To solve the problem, the teacher must find out how to make the students able to explore their idea in written text. The teacher should use various media in giving the materials and stimulate to the students.Modified powerpoint is one of the program in microsoft office which have modification with some elements, like video, audio, shape, and picture use some animation. This research has a purpose to find out the answer from the statement of the problem. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference of the ability of writing narrative text of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using modified powerpoint. This research wasa quantitative research which relies on quantitative data based on computation and measurement, operational variables and statistics. The design of thisresearchwas the quasi-experimental which was used pre-test and post-test though written test. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus which consist of 321 students and the sample of this research was class XI science 1. The instrument of this research was written tests and it gavethe treatment on some groups in a class. The result of this research showed that (i) the result of pre-test was categorized as sufficient. The score of mean and standard deviation were65.33and 4.87. Meanwhile, the result of post-test wascategorized as good. The score of mean and standard deviation were80.28 and 2.58. The calculation of t-test got result 23.32 with the level ofsignificant 0.05 and (df) was 44 which was gained N-1, t-table was ±2.021. It was concluded that there is a significant difference between the ability of writing narrative text of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using modified powerpoint. Considering the process and results of this research, the writer suggests that the English teacher should be more creative and innovative in selectedthe suitable media in teaching-learning process. Modified powerpoint can be used as alternative media to teach writing narrative text or other text. In fact, modified powerpoint could givemotivation to the students ability of writing narrative text and solve students’ bored in the classroom. Besides, the students got the better score after they got the treatments of applying modified powerpoint in their class.
