Abstrak

Vocabulary is one important aspect in learning a foreign language. Without a proportional amount of vocabulary anyone will get trouble in her speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Developing the student’s vocabulary is one of the most important tasks for English teachers. Because of them, vocabulary must be taught from the Elementary School to give more times to learn the English. Meanwhile, the students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu also have some problems in learning vocabulary. They can not memorize the new words given in every meeting well. To solve the problem, the writer uses flashcard. By using flashcard, the students will always remember the new vocabulary because the students are not confused to understand the new vocabulary by some pictures served in cards. Based on the background above, the writer would like to do a research entitled “The Mastery of English Vocabulary of the Fifth Grade Students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in the Academic Year 2011/2012 Taught by Using Flashcard”. The purposes of the research are: (i) To find out the extent of the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in the academic year of 2011/2012 before being taught by using flashcard (ii) To find out the extent of the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in the academic year of 2011/2012 after being taught by using flashcard (iii) To find out whether or not there is a significant difference of the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in the academic year of 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using flashcard This research is quantitative experimental research. The subject of the research is the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu which consist of 32 students. The instrument of the research was a test given to the fifth grade students of SD N kedungsari 02 Tayu. The result of this research shows that (i)the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using Flashcards is sufficient. (Mean = 63.75, Standard Deviation =13.5) (ii) the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using Flashcards is very good. (Mean = 93.37, Standard Deviation = 6.94) (iii) there is a significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Kedungsari 02 Tayu in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Flashcards. It can be seen on t-observation is higher than t-table (to = 12.85 > tt = 2.04). Considering the process and the results of this research, the writer suggests that (i) the English teacher should use Flashcards as an alternative direct media in teaching in English especially English vocabulary (ii) The students should master the English vocabulary. They can improve their mastery of English vocabulary by using Flashcards with their classmate. By mastering English vocabulary, it will make them easy to learn English.
