Abstrak

English is used as a means of communication in international world. It means we must be able to master it well. One of an important thing is English achievement in learning English. In learning English, the writer found a problem that the fourth grade students of SD Negeri Sambung Gajah Demak in the academic year 2013/2014 still passive in English achievement. In teaching learning process, the students chat with their friends when the teacher ask and give question. Therefore, the writer applied Outdoor activities in teaching English to improve the English achievement. The purpose of this research is to improve English achievement of the fourth grade students of SD negeri Sambung Gajah Demak in Academic year 2013/2014 by using Outdoor activities. This is an action research. The subject of this research was the fourth grade students of SD Negeri Sambung gajah Demak in academic year 2013/2014. They were 20 students in class B. There was two cycles in action. In each cycle, the procedure of the research consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the writer used observation, test, and interview. The result of the research shows that, the first implementation of Outdoor activities can improve English achievement. Before the action the average score is 68.70. After the action the students make improvement in English achievement, the average score of the test is 71.06. In second cycle, the average score of the test is increasing to 75.83. It is categorized as “good”. During the action, the students paid good participation on the lesson. It can be concluded that teaching English by using outdoor activities can improve English achievement. Therefore, the writer suggests that it would be better to the teacher to use Outdoor activities as one of technique in teaching English achievement. It makes the students more active and increases their English ability.
