Abstrak

Writing is one way to communicate. It is a skill which requires students to express their ideas in written form. The writer found problem owned by students of MTs. Manahijul ‘Ulum Plaosan in conducting English Writing. The writer thinks that English Diary as alternative technique for the students in learning process. English Diary make the students able to write English well in conveying their experiences and ideas, so that, they would be confident, and enjoy during the learning process. The subject of the research is the eighth grade students of MTs. Manahijul ‘Ulum Plaosan Cluwak Pati in academic year 2011/2012 with the number of students 36. The design of this research is experimental research by using test instrument (pre-test and post-test) and giving instrument only in one group. The result of this research shows that the ability writing recount texts of the eighth grade students of MTs. Manahijul ‘Ulum Plaosan Cluwak Pati in academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using English Diary is categorized sufficient. The score of Mean and Standard Deviation are 49.72 and 6.12. Meanwhile, the ability writing recount text of the eighth grade students of MTs. Manahijul ‘Ulum Plaosan Cluwak Pati in academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using English Diary is categorized good. The score of Mean and Standard Deviation are 70.4 and 10.37. The calculation of t-test gets result 5.65 and in the level of significant 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 35 which is gained N – 1, t-table is 2.042. It is concluded that there is a significant difference between the ability writing recount text of the eighth grade students of MTs. Manahijul ‘Ulum Plaosan Cluwak Pati in academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using English Diary. Considering the process and the result of this research, I suggest that an interesting technique in teaching English, especially to improve their ability in writing recount text. One of them is English Diary as an alternative technique in teaching written recount text. This is because writing starting from their everyday life is actually an example of recount text. Hopefully, there will be further studies observing other advantages of writing diary.
