Abstrak

The writer got the informations from the English teacher of the eighth grade class in MTs N 1 Kudus; the students still have problems in understanding the English texts. They have difficulty to understand texts. It can be seen from their scores of the first semester. More than 20% from the total numbers of the eighth grade students did not reach the passing grade (KKM) that is 76. She thinks it needs an effective way to solve the problem.Inferring strategy is an effective way to develop students reading comprehension. Based on the statement of the problem above, the purpose of this research can be mentioned: To find out the significant difference between the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N 1 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using inferring strategy. In this research, the writer uses a research design with experimental research without control group that is called as quasi- experimental research. The experimental research is applied to the eighthgrade students of MTs N 1 Kudus to explore the result of their reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Inferring Strategy. Therefore, the conclusion can be stated that there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs N 1 Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using inferring strategy. In the level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 37, the t-observation (t0) is 11.57 and t-table (tt) is ± 2.042; the t-observation is higher than t-table (t0 = 11.57 > tt =± 2.042). So, inferring strategy is more efficient to be used in teaching reading comprehension texts and make the students more active. While, the students before being taught by using inferring strategy, it makes them bored, and still hardly to remember about the text. Basedon the conclusion of the research, the writer would like to give suggestion and hopefully would be useful for the teacherand for the other researcher. (1) Inferring is a strategy that can be applied in a reading class. (2) This research can be used as a reference by the further researchers.
