                    Abstrak

                    Coherence is contribution of contextual property of paragraph to be unity of a piece of discourse stands together and relates each other. To create a coherence text needs the elements related the cohesive development and produce a coherent whole text which is thematic progression. Thematic progression is the elements development of a clause connects each other called theme and rheme. The coherence text should also be a requirement in the textbook as media of teaching and learning process, especially in Senior High School tenth grade. The writer chooses to analyze recount text because recount is one of the main genre which is explained in most-used media of teaching, Look Ahead book. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of theme, the thematic progression and the coherence of recount texts in Look Ahead book Tenth Grade published by Erlangga. The descriptive qualitative is used to design this research. Whereas, the data of this research is the coherence of recount text and the data source of this research is Look Ahead Book of tenth grade published by Erlangga which consists of eight texts. The coherence is gotten and concluded by analyzing the types of theme and the thematic progression used in data source. Based on the data analysis, all eight Recount texts of Look Ahead book consist of twenty-third paragraphs. The writer concludes that the Recount text of Look Ahead book Tenth Grade published by Erlangga is coherent. Considering the result of this research, the writer would like to give some suggestion for teacher, reader and student. For the students, they can explore their knowledge and understanding of creating paragraphs. In addition, good writing is not only about how to write a lot, but also how writing can be understood by others. However understanding of theme and rheme and thematic progression to find coherence are also important. For the English teacher they should choose the appropriate textbook for their students related to the coherent factor in text. The last for the readers they can add their knowledge and get new information of theme and rheme and thematic progression to find coherence in the sentences.
