                  Abstrak

                  Speaking is an important aspect in language learning. By speaking, we can convey information and ideas, and maintain social relationship by communication with others. Speaking skill is the ability to perform the linguistics knowledge in actual communication. The students are expected to be able to use English both oral and written communication. In fact, many students have difficulties in speaking English. The students are passive in the teaching and learning process of speaking, the students don’t have any idea or initiative to speak, or when they have ideas, they don’t know how to express the ideas. It’s due to the lack of vocabulary, lack of understanding of grammatical patterns, and lack of practicing English speaking. Based on the fact, the writer thinks that it would be better using puppet to solve this problem. Puppet is a model of a person or an animal that can be made to move by the puppeteer holds. Its make process of teaching and learning more fun and comfort to the students. The writer is interested in using puppet because this media is easy to practice. The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the speaking skill of the seventh grade students of Mts. Assyafi’iyah Banyumanis Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using puppet. Experimental design is design, of this research, use one group pre-test post-test. The population is the seventh grade students of Mts. Assyafi’iyah Banyumanis Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. The writer use cluster random sampling to gets the sample. The writer got class VII B as experiment. The number of sample is 32 students. The writer used a test as instrument of the research. The test is oral test consist of 2 items. The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference between speaking skill of the seventh grade students of Mts. Assyafi’iyah Banyumanis Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using puppet, it is presented with the t-test (to) = 21.42 > t-table (tt)= 2.04. It indicates that alternative hypothesis that there is significant difference between speaking skill of the seventh grade students of Mts.Assyafi’iyah Banyumanis Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using puppet is confirmed. Therefore, the writer suggest that it would be better for the teacher to apply puppet as effective media to teach speaking, because it can improve speaking skill for the students.
