                      Abstrak

                      As language, English has Phonology, vocabulary, and grammar as the components. Grammar has an important role in arranging vocabularies to be a good phrase, clause, sentence, and paragraph. For the non-native speaker, English grammar is seen as the most difficult component to be learnt by the English leraners. Tense is one of many grammar rules that English learners should master. Simple past tense is the familiar one . it can be found in some text which tell about past time, on of them is narrative text. In writing narrative text, a researcher will highly need this tense to give more detail information of the verb which tell events This research is aimed to find out the correlation between the simple past mastery and the writing ability of narrative text of the twelfth graders of MAN 01 Pati in 2016/2017 academic year To be able to find out the correlation between the simple past tense mastery and the writing ability of narrative text, the researcher conducted a correlational research which is in area of quantitative. The number of sample is 35 students which is taken randomly from regular class. Test is used as the instrument of this research. There are two test forms to gather data; multiple choice test to get the data of the students’ simple past tense mastery and essay test to get the students’ achievement in writing narrative text. The result of this research shows that the mean for the mastery of simple past tense is 78.35 and the standard deviation is 17.7. Then, the mean for writing ability of narrative text is 83,1 and the standart deviation is 10.7. From those data, 0.68 is gotten for the coefficient rxy. Because of the coefficient rxy is not equal with 0, the null hypothesis (Ho)is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is confirmed. Therefore, there is a significant correlation between the simple past tense mastery and writing ability of narrative text of the twelfth graders of MAN 01 Pati in 2016/2017 academic year. Due to the result of this research, the students should study more about simple past tense specifically and grammar generally. They should also study text types completely include their generic structures and lexicogrammatical features. Then, the teacher as facilitator should be able to facilitate the need of the student in any mistake.
