Abstrak
English is as an International language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they enter in global workforcethat makes the students’ preference with it, and it is should be found that students have obvious preferences in the choice of those department, these preferences are particularly evident in college English Education Department.And that the problem here is that the students’ choosing English Education Department is not all from themselves. There are some students who choose English because of compulsion, and it can happen because of several factors. This research aim is to describe the reasons of the students’ preferences in choosing English Education Department of the first semester in English Education Department of Muria Kudus University in academic year 2016/2017. In this research the writer uses qualitative research design and the data of this research is students’ preference of twenty students of Muria Kudus University that choosen English Education Department of first semester in academic year 2016/2017, while the data source is the participants of this study are 20 students of first semester of English Education Department who have taken English Education Department in academic year 2016/2017. The result of this research shows that the highest one of the percentage are from students’ reasonin choosing English Education Department are the students’ self based on their skill ability in English, and the second are caused the students’ want to be an English teacher, the third are from their parent. While, the students’ opinion about English teacher profession can assure after the students’ graduate from English Education Department as follow: 60% votes agreed and 40% votes disagreed. Then, opinion that English Education Department is important for being an English teacher in future, 95% votes agreed and 5% votes disagreed. It concludes that the opinion of the students about English Education Department is important and assured to be an English teacher arepositive. Based on the result above, the writer concludes that the reason of the students’ preference of the first semester students’ in choosing English Education Department are positivefrom themselves. The writer also gives suggestion for: (1) the students’ should be able to achieve their purpose what they want after choose English Department no matter the reason of the students have, (2) the lecturer should be making consideration in learning process because the students having different reason in choosing English Department., (3) the next researchershould be developing this research by knowing the reason of students’ preferences in choosing English Education Department and can be reference to provide information and contribution related the case. It would be more interesting if the next researcher can conduct the new research about the same case with the following issue after this research.
