Abstrak

Nowadays, the politeness is often we find in communication process be at all people, especially be at young people. In the fact, the writer still finds the students who do not use politeness in communication. So, the student’s politeness still lack. For example, when students talk with a teacher or lecturer to get an appointment of meeting, sometimes we find that the students pressure to students. That situation shows us ill manner. Deservedly, the students give respectful when they are talking with elder person especially with teacher or lecturer. Because our purpose in communication cannot occurs without a good communication by politeness strategies. The objective of this research is to describe the types of politeness strategies are realized in SMS texts written by the eighth semester students and advisors of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. The data of this research is politeness strategies found in SMS texts of the eighth semester student and advisors of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University. As the data source of this research is transcript in SMSTexts of 15 students. As the result of analysis found the politeness strategies in SMS texts written by the eighth semester student of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University. It can be seen in the terms: bald on record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record-indirect strategy, the writer took 15 students of eighth semester to be analyzed. There are four types of politeness strategies. They are; bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off-record-indirect strategy. Each strategy has some sub-strategies. Bald on record has 9 sub-strategies, positive politeness has 15 sub-strategies, negative politeness has 10 sub-strategies and off-record-indirect has 14 sub-strategies. In SMS text written by the eighth student semester, the findings show that there are (30) sentences of bald on record, (54) sentences of positive politeness, (43) sentences of negative politeness and (7) sentences of off-record-indirect strategy. The writer think that the politeness strategies is very important. For lecturers, politeness is so important to teach in classroom with aim to make a conducive teaching and learning process and also applying politeness in English classroom. Teacher should give a special attention to politeness by having more practices in order to teach how to make a good conversation with students.For the students, the student should be aware of the use of politeness in communicating with others, especially with lecturers. Politeness is very important to study. Especially in positive and negative politeness give the way to speak correctly to each other based on positive and negative politeness. They can apply politeness in the conversation and learning process.For the next researchers, in conducting this research, the researcher should be aware first about the politeness. So, the writer hopes may this research can be useful for the education especially in learning and teaching processthis research can be used as a good reference about Politeness Strategies.
