Abstrak

Writing is one of the skills in language which taught the students. There are competences in curriculum 2013 for senior high school, the researcher have problems in writing, the students cannot understand grammar, their ability in writing is less, the students have limit vocabulary, and they open dictionary in every learning process. To solve the problems, the researcher proposed is story mapping as technique. It can help the students to develop their writing. The purpose of the research is to find out whether any significant difference between the writing ability of narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Pati in 2018/2019 academic year before and after being taught by using Story Mapping. The design of the research is experimental research. The researcher uses single- group model, pre- test, post- test and the treatment only in the class. The instrument is written test. The population of the research is written test. The population of the research is the eleventh graders of SMA PGRI 1 Pati in 2018/2019 academic year and the sample is XI IPA 5 which consist 40 students. The result of the research shows that the mean of the pre-test scores is 60.25 is categorized as “Sufficient”. Therefore, the mean of post-test scores is 85 as categorized as “Excellent.” Based on the result of the data, t- critical is ± 0.308 with level significance (α) 0.05, and degree of freedom (df) is 39 and t-obtained (to)is 13.35 and the t-test is 0.308. However, the researcher rejected the null hypothesis and accepted and the alternative hypothesis, because (t0)t-obtained falls in the critical region. The hypothesis state “ there is a significant difference between the writing ability of narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Pati in 2018/2019 academic year before and after being taught by using story mapping.” Based on the process and the result, the resesearcher suggests that the English teacher should use a new technique in teaching learning process. Story mapping technique can be used as alternative technique to teach writing of narrative text.
