Abstrak

Language as a tool of communication plays an important function in transferring information from the sender to the receiver. Whenever communication takes place, the unity of grammar and meaning is essential to make easy the process of delivering and receiving information. Therefore, in delivering information both in spoken and written, we need the unity of language. This unity of language in a text can be seen from the use of cohesive devices within the text that has various functions when applied. The objective of this research is to find out the cohesive devices used in the transcript of President Barack Obama’s speech and the kinds of cohesive device that are mostly used in the text with the functions to the text. Descriptive qualitative research is used as the design of research to reach the objectives of this research. The data of this research is the cohesive devices found in the transcript of President Barack Obama’s speech on United Nation General Aseembly (UNGA) 2011. Meanwhile, the data source of this research is the transcript itself. The findings showed that the percentages of the cohesive devices found in the transcript of President Barack Obama’s speech are the repetition is the dominant type with 39.40 %, followed by reference type with 25.80 %, conjunction type with 12.05 %, collocation type with 8.61%, hyponymy type with 7.64 %, synonymy type with 3.25%, meronymy type 3.21 %, substitution type with 0.03 % and the last is ellipsis with 0.01 %. Then, in the end of this research there is a fact that the cohesive devices mostly in the text of speech are repetition which belongs to lexical cohesion, reference and conjunction which belong to grammatical cohesion. The number of cohesive devices used by Barack Obama in his speech makes it easily understandable for the readers. Thus, I personally suggest all readers, especially English teachers, put cohesive devices as an inclusive material in teaching writing English text practically, not only teach them the theory. The use of appropriate cohesive devices can create a good and text that is easily understood.
