Abstrak
Reported Speech is one of English structure lesson in SMA, MA and SMK. It is taught in the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus. Most of them are still difficult to understand it. Therefore, the teacher must choose a right teaching method. The teacher should use an appropriate method to teach reported speech. The teacher can use index card match to help the student mastery it easily. The objectives of this research is to find out whether there is significant difference between the mastery of reported speech of the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus before and after being taught by using index card match in academic year 2011/2012. The research is done at the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus. The design of this research is Quasi-experimental research by using test instrument. The research subject is the whole students, consist of 38 students. The instrument used to collect the data is written test that contents 40 multiple choice test. All of students are given pre-test, the test which is given before using index card match, and after they get the treatment, the research continuous giving post-test. The result of this research indicates that using index card match can lead the students to create an active learning environment in mastering reported speech material. It can be seen from the pre-test and post-test result. The result of pre-test is low (mean=65.32, median=63.94, mode=62, and standard deviation=14.48). And the result of post-test is sufficient (mean=76.39, median=82.5, modus=80.37, and standard deviation=8.65). It shows that there is a significant difference between the mastery of reported speech of the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus before and after being taught by using index card match in academic year 2011/2012. The result of t-observation is higher than t-table (to = 8.48 ˃ tt = 2.03). Based on the result of the research above, the writer suggests that the teacher can use index card match as the one of alternative method to teach reported speech material because it is proved that it works well in increasing students’ reported speech mastery.
