Abstrak

Writing is a skill to deliver our thought, ideas, and experiences to others. Writing is one skill that is difficult to learn. News item text is factual text which informs readers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important. Some of the students in SMA N 2 Bae Kudus had difficulties in getting and developing the ideas. Writing needs specialized skills on how to get ideas and express them. And the writing ability of students is not being achieved yet. Most of students got score under KKM (Passing Grade) or the score was low. It is proved by the percentage of students writing score; only 30 % of students get high score and 70 % gets score under passing grade, it is 76 in English and writing. The writer assumes that using good technique or using media can solve the problem. For the reason above, the writer is inspired to apply News Video as media in teaching writing. The purpose of this research is to describe there is a significant difference between the writing ability of news item text of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by Using News video as media. In this research the writer used a quasi experimental research design. There are two variables; the use of News Video as independent variable and the writing ability of news item text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 as dependent variable. The writer determined tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 as the population. The writer took samples in X5 as class of experiment. After conducting the treatment of the writing ability of news item text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus taught by using News Video in academic year 2013/2014, the result of the experiment can be seen that the calculation of t-test, with the level of significance 5%, the Degree of Freedom (Df) is 31, and t-table (tt) ± 2.042, the t- obtained (to) 5.06. So, the test statistic falls into the critical region. It means that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is confirmed. The writing ability of news item text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus after being taught by using News Video in academic year 2013/2014 is “good”. It is showed by the mean of 76.12 and the standard deviation of 6.57. It is higher than the mean of the writing ability of news item text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus before being taught by using News Video in academic year 2013/2014 which the mean 69.65 and standard deviation is 6.94. It is categorized as “sufficient”. Based on the research result above, the writer concludes that News Video is effective to be used in teaching writing of the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. For the teacher and the other researcher, News Video can be useful for teaching learning especially as media in teaching writing especially writing news item text.
