Abstrak

English is the language used for global range. Mastering English will be useless without the mastery of speaking. Some schools, including MA NU Banat Kudus, have established a conversation club for all of the students in the eleventh grade as a media for the students to improve their speaking ability in English. This research is conducted to know the implementation of English Conversation Club at MA NU Banat Kudus. The objectives of the research are: 1) To describe the students and teachers’ classroom English used in the English Conversation Club at MA NU BANAT KUDUS in academic year 2013/2014. 2) To describe the students’ opinion when working in a group in English Conversation Club at MA NU BANAT KUDUS in academic year 2013/2014. This research applies descriptive qualitative research, aimed at describing the classroom English used by the teacher and student, and describing students’ opinion toward working in a group in the implementation of English conversation Club in academic year 2013/2014. Subjects of the research were 20 students. The data for the research are collected through observation, and questionnaire. An observation conducted for three meetings, it’s to describe classroom English used by the teacher and students. The observation sheet is arranged based on the Glyns theory. And the questionnaire was filled out by these subjects to describe their opinion toward working in a group in conversation club. The results of the research showed that the teacher uses more classroom English in each meeting rather than the students. However, the teacher tends to use the same classroom English in each meeting. For the first data, it is found that the use of classroom English in beginning the lesson have shown the majority of classroom English (55 %) are used by the teacher and the students just ( 27,77 %). Then in running the lesson it have shown the majority of classroom English (53,33 %) are used by the teacher and the students just (13,33%). In ending the lesson, it is found that the use of classroom English have shown the majority of classroom English (27,77 %) are used by the teacher and the students just (11,11 %). The second data is about students’ opinion toward working in a group in the implementation of English Conversation Club. Overall, when working in a group most of students feel happy although there are some obstacles that they feel in a group. The data showed that working in a group or group work has positive impacts towards the students’ learning. From this research, it can be concluded that the teacher use classroom English more than the students do. Although, the teacher still used a little varieties of Classroom English in the implementation of English Conversation Club. Then, a group work activity in English Conversation Club has given positive impact for the students. In suggestions, for the teachers, it is better if they use more varieties of classroom English then applies it in the class. It can increase the students’ English knowledge. In group work, it is better if a teacher not only as an instructor but also as the facilitator for students. For eleventh grade students, following a club like English Conversation Club it will increase their English knowledge. For the next researcher, it can be reference for the next research, which related to the topic.
