Abstrak

Language components are structure, pronunciation and vocabulary. Vocabulary as one of the language components, beside pronunciation and grammar. Students cannot say or write anything in English without knowing English vocabulary mastery. In teaching vocabulary, the teachers have different ways to present their lessons. The teaching strategy have been used to increase student’s skills in the mastery of vocabulary is Word Mapping as a strategy. Therefore, the writer carries out the research entitled” The English Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in Academic Year 2011/2012 taught by using Word Mapping Strategy. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is significant difference between the English vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Word Mapping Strategy. This research is Quasi Experimental research by using test instrument (pre-test and post-test) and gives the treatment only in one group, consist of 34 students, and all students are given pre-test, the test which is given before using Word Mapping, and after they get the treatment, the research continues giving the post-test.The population of this research is the second semester students of the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in academic year 2011/2012. In collecting data, a multiple- choice test is used in the form objective. The number of the test is 25 items. The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference between the English vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using Word Mapping Strategy, it is presented with the t-test (to) = 7.02 > t-table (tt)= 2.034. It indicates that alternative hypothesis that there is significant difference between the English vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati before and after being taught by using Word Mapping Strategy. The English Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in the Academic Year 2011/2012 before being taught by using Word Mapping Strategy is sufficient. It showed that the high test score is 88 and the lowest score is 52. The score of mean is 69.82 and standard deviation is 9.45. The English Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 1 Winong Pati in the Academic Year 2011/2012 after being taught by using Word Mapping Strategy is good. It showed the high test score is 100 and the lowest score is 60. The score of mean is 83 and standard deviation is11.06. Thus, the writer concludes that Word Mapping Strategy is effective for teaching English vocabulary mastery in SMP N 1 Winong Pati.
