Abstrak

Speaking is a core skill of language learning. The main purpose of learning foreign language is the ability to communicate using the target language, especially English. But in the fact many of English learners cannot speak English well, especially Senior High School students’. It pulls the researcher‘s interest in conducting research in a Senior High School in order to solve the problem. In this case the researcher uses Ask and Answer Question Method to teach speaking, because this method provides some benefits to improve students speaking ability. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is significant difference between student speaking ability of the tenth graders of SMK Raden Umar Said in academic year 2018/2019 before and after taught by using of Ask and Answer Question. This research is quantitative research. The design of the research is an experimental research by using pre-test and post-tes without control group. This research is consists of two variables, they are independent and dependent variable. The independent variable is the use of Ask and Answer Question method, and dependent variable is the speaking ability of tenth graders of SMK Raden Umar Said Kudus in the academic year 2018/2019. The result of the research shows that the speaking ability of tenth graders after being taught by using Ask and Answer Question method is better than speaking ability of tenth graders before being taught by using Ask and Answer Question method. The mean of pre-test is 43,77, whereas the mean of post test is 54,85, the t-observation is -9,458 and t-table is 1,69 with the level significant 0,05 and the number of degree freedom (df) 34 From (35-1). It means that the t-observation is higher than t-table, so H0 is rejected and (Ha) is accepted. Based on the result, the researcher concludes that there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the tenth graders of SMK Raden Umar Said Kudus in academic year 2018/2019 before and after being taught by using Ask and Asnwer Question method. It can be said that Ask and Answer Question method is effective in improving the students’ speaking ability. So, the researcher suggests that the English teacher can use Ask and Answer Question method as one alternative techniquein teaching speaking. But the English teacher should pay attention to the number of students and the time managent in applying this method. The more students, the more time is needed.
