Abstrak

In many literature works, we find many sentences which cannot be meant by the actual words. These sentences are called idioms. Idiom is fixed group of words with a special meaning that cannot be guessed from the combination of the actual word used. The Muppets is one of musical comedy movie that can be used as a material to master idioms in English as its dialogs consist of many idioms. The Muppets are a group of puppet characters created by "The Muppeteer" legend Jim Henson. For the reason above, the writer is interested to carry out a research entitled “The Analysis of Idiom in the Script of the Muppets Movie” The purposes of the research are: (i) to find out the kinds of idioms found in the script of the Muppets movie (ii) to find out the idiom mostly found in the script of the Muppets movie This research is qualitative descriptive research. The data of this study are utterances contain idiom. Meanwhile, the data source of this study is movie script of The Muppets Movie. The instrument of this study is the writer. The result of this research shows that (i) there are 62 idioms found in the script of the Muppets movie. It consists of 25 neutral, 33 colloquial and 4 slangs. There is no colloquial idiom found in the script of the Muppets movie (ii) the idiom mostly found in the script of the Muppets movie is colloquial idiom which consists of 33 idioms. The percentage of neutral is 40.32%, formal is 0%, colloquial is 53.23% and slang is 6.45%. It can be concluded that colloquial has the highest percentage found in the script of the Muppets movie Considering the process and the results of this research, the writer suggests that (i) the teachers can vary their teaching learning process by teaching some expressions contains idioms. The teacher can use the example not only from the text book but also from art work (movie) or from the daily conversation (ii) the students can board their knowledge by studying some expressions especially idioms. By studying the idioms, the students can vary the language used in their daily life (iii) this research can be a reference to conduct the same field. The further researchers are hoped to make a better research for the further research .
