Hilal Madjdi, M.Pd Key words: Speaking ability, role play Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. Despite its importance, for many years, teaching speaking has been undervalued and English language teachers have continued to teach speaking just as a repetition of drills or memorization of dialogues. The seventh grade students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus argue that speaking is not easy and interesting. They are still difficult and it can influence their mastering other main skills of English. The teaching and learning process is dominant by the teacher, while we know that the new curriculum (KTSP) should be hoped the students active and innovative in teaching learning process. The present of Role Play is one of speaking activities that works for communicative approach. Understanding the fact, the writer is eager to help them by using role play to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus in academic year 2012/2013. This action research aims are: to find out the improvement of speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus in the Academic Year 2012/2013 by using role play. This research applied a classroom action research. The research was conducted in the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus in the second semester of academic year 2012/2013. The number of the students in the classroom was 31 students; 16 female and 15 male. The research design which is used in this research is classroom action research. The definition of it is research carried out in the classroom by the teacher of the course mainly with the purpose of solving the problem or improving the teaching learning process. In the beginning observation, the reflection is determined by speaking knowledge of students in teaching learning process. To know trough role play can improve their speaking ability, so the writer uses spoken test to measure it. The next step is the researcher do the research, the writer uses cycles. There are some cycles in classroom action research: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data of this research was taken from the result of observation and spoken testof those three cycles conducted. Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension are speaking components to indicate students’ engagement. The findings of the research showed that: on the first cycle, there were 57.41% students who had got scores under the criteria Minimal Score. The mean score was 57.41 as low. The students’ responses were difficult to perform and speak using role play. The high score for this cycle is 68 and the low score is 52, its means that all the students still below the KKM. On cycle 2, there were 69.67% students who had got scores under the criteria minimal score. The mean score was 69.67 as still low. The students’ responses were still difficult to improve the words and feel shy when they perform. The high score for this cycle is 72 and the low score is 64, its means that all the students still below the KKM.On cycle 3, there were 80.51% students who had got scores achieve the criteria Minimal Score. The mean score was 80.51 as satisfactory. The students’ responses werehappy to perform and speak using role play. The high score for this cycle is 88 and the low score is 76, its means that all the students achieve of KKM. This research comes to the conclusion that role play can improve the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus in the academic year of 2012/2013. Thus, the writer suggests that a teacher should give support to speak up to improve teaching speaking and contain role play on school. So it will motivate the students to speak and to share their speaking ability. Hilal Madjdi, M.Pd Kata kunci: Kemampuan Berbicara, Bermain Peran Berbicara adalah bagian terpenting dari bahasa kedua yang digunakan untuk sumber pengetahuan dan pembelajaran. Meskipun berbicara sangat penting dalam beberapa tahun, pembelajaran dengan menggunakan kemampuan berbicara masih belum dihargai dan guru bahasa inggris hanya mengulang pelajaran dan siswa dituntut untuk mengingat kembali sebuah dialog yang telah disampaikan. Siswa kelas VII di SMP 1 Undaan Kudus berpendapat bahwa berbicara dalam bahasa inggris itu tidak mudah dan tidak menarik. Mereka masih bingung untuk bisa mempergunakan kata-kata dalam bahasa inggris. Proses belajar mengajar yang masih diutamakan oleh guru, pada saat ini menggunakan kurikulum baru (KTSP) yang mengharapkan siswa dapat aktif dan inovatif didalam proses belajar mengajar. Dengan fakta tersebut, penulis ingin sekali membantu mereka dengan menggunakan bermain peran sebagai media untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VII pada SMP 1 Undaan Kudus pada tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Tujuan penelitian tindakan kelas ini adalah: Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VII pada SMP 1 Undaan Kudus pada tahun ajaran 2012/2013 menggunakan bermain peran. Dengan jumlah siswa kelas VIIB adalah 31 siswa: 16 siswa perempuan dan 15 siswa laki-laki. Bentuk penelitian yang biasa digunakan dalam suatu penelitian adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian tindakan kelas adalah penelitian yang sebagian besar digunakan oleh guru untuk mengajar dikelas dengan tujuan untuk memecahkan suatu masalah atau peningkatan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Pada awal pengamatan, refleksi tentu menjadi suatu yang pokok pengetahuan dari seorang murid dalam proses belajar mengajar. Untuk mengetahui penggunaan bermain peran dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara pada siswa, penulis menggunakan tes lisan untuk mendukung semua itu. Langkah selanjutnya peneliti melakukan penelitian dengan menggunakan beberapa siklus. Terdapat beberapa siklus dalam penelitian tindakan kelas yaitu: perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan dan refleksi. Data penelitian diperoleh dari hasil lembar observasi dan tes berbicara dari tiga siklus yang dilaksanakan. Pelafalan, tata bahasa, penyusunan kata, kelancaran dan pemahaman adalah komponen berbicara untuk menunjukkan siswa dalam kemampuan berbicara. Temuan dari penelitian yang dilaksanakan memperlihatkan bahwa: pada siklus 1, terdapat 57.41% murid yang mendapatkan nilai dibawah nilai KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal) dari pelajaran bahasa inggris yang telah ditentukan yaitu 75. Nilai rata-ratanya adalah 57.41 dalam kategori rendah pada kategori perolehan. Itu berarti, nilai siswa kelas VIIB belum mencapai KKM. Pada siklus kedua, terdapat 69.67% siswa yang masih mendapatkan nilai dibawah KKM. Nilai rata-ratanya adalah 69.67 dalam kategori masih rendah. Pada siklus kedua ini, respon siswa masih sulit untuk memahami kata-kata dan siswa merasa malu ketika memainkan peran. Nilai tertinggi yang diperoleh dalam siklus kedua ini adalah 72 dan nilai terendahnya adalah 64. Itu berarti, nilai yang diperoleh semua siswa kelas VIIB masih dibawah KKM. Pada siklus ketiga, terdapat 80.51% siswa yang nilainya sudah mencapai KKM. Nilai rata-ratanya adalah 80.51 dalam kategori memuaskan. Respon siswa dalam siklus ini, sangat senang untuk tampil dan berbicara ketika sedang memainkan peran. Nilai tertinggi dalam siklus ini adalah 88 dan nilai terendahnya adalah 76. Itu berarti semua siswa kelas VIIB sudah mencapai KKM. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa bermain peran sebagai media dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VII SMP 1 Undaan Kudus pada tahun pelajaran 2012/2013. Dengan demikian, penulis menyarankan, seorang guru harus lebih mengevaluasi tugas siswa untuk dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dan bermain peran, sehingga akan memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara dan mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara mereka. Maka dari itu, mereka merasa senang dan bangga karena hasil mereka medapatkan penghargaan dari sekolah.
