Abstrak
Retelling story is an important ability to support the speaking skill better. Beside speaking skill is one of the important and essential skills that must be practiced to communicate orally. Therefore, the teacher must use the appropriate teaching media to practice the students so that they are able to speak English actively. Cartoon film is one of the alternative teaching media that can be used in teaching English in order to the students speak English easily in retelling story. In this research, the writer uses cartoon film as a teaching media in teaching English. The purpose of this research is to find out the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using cartoon film. To find out the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using cartoon film. To find out the significant difference between the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using cartoon film. The writer conducted an experimental research which used quasi experimental design. In applying this experiment, the writer used one group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted in the eleventh grade of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2011/2012. The number of the students in the classroom was 28 students. The writer used oral test as an instrument to gather the data. The result of the research shows that the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before being taught by using cartoon film can be categorized as “sufficient”. From the calculation, the Mean of this pretes is 58.71 and deviation standard is 9.14. Meanwhile, the result of the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 after being taught by using cartoon film can be categorized as “good”. The mean of this posttest is 73 and deviation standard is 9.02. In the level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom 27 there is a significant difference between the ability of retelling story of the eleventh grade students of SMK Rohmatul Ummah Jekulo Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught by using cartoon film. It is shown from the calculation result of t-observation is 16.64 and the t-table is 2.025. In other words, t-observation is higher than t-table (to = 16.64> tt = 2.025). Based on the result above, the students are more active to express their idea in retelling story by using cartoon film. This proves that cartoon film can improve the retelling story ability of the student, so it is suggested that the English teacher uses cartoon film as a medium the teacher can give motivation to the students to learn English in more enjoyable and interesting ways.
