Abstrak

An abstract is short summary written by a writer or researcher in the beginning page of his or her thesis or research report. An abstract has information on the topic, the research problem, research design, basic findings, conclusion and suggestion. By analyzing sentence types in the abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference, it can give knowledge of learners about sentence types and the result of the research can be used as reference to help the students in making a good writing. The objective of this research are to find out the types of sentence in the abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference, to find out the percentages, and to know the similarities and the differences of the types of sentence used in the abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference. Descriptive qualitative method has been utilized to reach the objectives of this research. The data of this research is the types of sentence (simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound-complex sentence). Meanwhile, the data source of this research is the abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference. The result shows that all types of sentence are used in both abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference. Based on the data, there are 162 sentences. The total numbers and percentages of the types of sentences in the abstracts of the English proceeding of national conference are 87 (53.70%). It consists of 45 (51.72%) occurrences of simple sentence, 8 (9.19%) compound sentence, 32 (36.78%) complex sentence, and 2 (2.30%) compound-complex sentence. Meanwhile, the total numbers and percentages of the types of sentences in the abstracts of the English proceeding of international conference are 75 (46.30%). It consists of 41 (54.67%) occurrences of simple sentence, 3 (4%) compound sentence, 30 (40%) complex sentence, and 1 (1.33%) compound-complex sentence. The similarities of sentence types found in both abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference are they both use all the 4 types of sentence, and the highest frequency is placed by simple sentence, followed by complex sentence, compound sentence, and the lowest frequency is compound-complex sentence. Besides, the difference of sentence types found in the abstracts of the English proceeding of national and international conference can be seen from the total number of all types of sentence i.e. 87 for the abstracts of the English proceeding of national conference and 75 for the abstracts of the English proceeding of international conference. By the result of the analysis, the writer states her suggestion for the writers of proceeding article to use a variety of types of sentence to make writing interesting, lively and easy to understand. For students, they should learn more deeply about sentence types and more practice to write in order to be able to create a well patterned sentence in text or composition, and for the further researchers who want to conduct a similar research as she did, they can use this research as previous research finding to sustain their research
