Advisors: (1) Titis Sulistyowati, SS. M.Pd. (2) Dr. H. A. Hilal Madjdi, M.Pd. Keywords: hedges, types of hedges, oprah winfrey talk show In the process of communication, the used of language cannot and need not be correct, complete and precise all the time. An aspect of language used hedges which is a linguistic resource for both oral and written discourse. The used hedges to make the utterance became clear and to be softened for reasons of face. If a speaker does not agree to his or her partner, he or she can soften the expression of disagreement by saying. There are 9 expressions of the types of hedges as stated the theory from Evans (2007) which is cited from web page (http://clpd.bbk.ac.uk/students/hedges). The objective of this research is to find out the types of hedges which are used on Oprah Winfrey Talk Show. Descriptive qualitative research is used as the design of research to reach the objectives of this research. The data of this research is hedges. Meanwhile, the data source of this research is found in the Oprah Winfrey Talk Show. The finding of the study reveal that, on the data, the writer can indicate the frequency of the type of hedges hedges found there are 236 modal auxiliary verbs, 122 modal lexical verbs, 4 probability adjective, 3 nouns, 52 adverbs, 21 approximators of degree; quantity; frequency; and time, 20 introductory phrases, 74 if clauses, and 22 compound hedges. So, the writer can conclude that in this interview their utterances used of hedges, especially the used of modal auxiliary verbs. The writer considers hedges are so important to be learnt. The students can learn more about hedges, not only types of hedges but also the function of hedges. For the teacher, the writer hopes that they can use types of hedges as source of teaching learning process, they should choose the appropiate sources so that their students can improve the understanding of hedges. And for the futher researches who have the same interest to analyze types of hedges, the result of this research can be reference or comparison that might be relevant to their researchers.
