Key words: writing ability, writing speed, the correlation research. English is important for students to learn, because it has been widely known as an international language. Learning English will help students to be able to communicate to other people all over the world. There are various skills to master English language. One of them is writing ability. Writing ability is what people intend to say in written form. Here, a writer has to pay attention in aspects of writing and under timed conditions. In fact, the students of MA NU Banat Kudus still have difficulty in composing a report text in very short period. Their speed of writing to write a report text during 30 minutes is still away from the normal range of writing. For that reason, the writer is curious to find what aspects influenced their writing ability and their writing speed. The purpose of the research is to find out whether there is a significant correlation between students’ writing ability and students’ writing speed of the eleventh grade of MA NU Banat Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014. This research is a correlation research which can be categorized into descriptive quantitative research. The research was conducted at the XI.AU 1 students of MA NU Banat Kudus in the first semester of academic year 2013/2014. The number of the students who joined the research process consist of 30 students. The data of this research was taken from the result of written test. The students have to write a report text as much as possible the total number of words while 30 minutes. The result of the data shows that the mean score of students’ writing ability is 74.3 that it is included in level of average, and the mean score of students’ writing speed is 5.68 wpm that it is included in low category. The coefficient correlation between students’ writing ability and students’ writing speed is 0.62. The criterion of coefficient value is categorized high correlation, in the level of significance 1% and N=30 the critical value is 0.463. It is shown that rxy = 0.62 > rtable 0.01 (30) = 0.463, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is confirmed, because the coefficient of rxy is higher than the coefficient on the table of critical value. This research comes to the conclusion that the correlation between students’ writing ability and students’ writing speed of the eleventh grade of MA NU Banat Kudus is significant. The writer suggests that it would be better for the teachers to control the limitation of time to know the effectiveness applying this way in order to make a text well and applying writing speed in many times, because it is needed to give more practice to the students. It is also possible for those who want to make further analysis of writing and writing speed to obtain detailed information
