Abstrak

English is the language mostly used by the people around the world, especially in communication between nations. In English learning, the teachers requires the right method or learning approach which is suitable with the characteristic of learning material and learners potentials.. The Implementation of English Learning in seventh grade students of SMP Assalam NU in academic year 2009/2010 is not always run well and can improve students' mastery of teaching materials, as long as these learning outcomes or scoreof students are same or above KKM is always below 60%. The implementation of cooperative method is one of the main options for teachers to improve the mastery of simple present tense. Cooperative learning STAD method is an instructional strategy that focuses on grouping students with different levels of academic ability into smaller groups. This learning method can be defined as a structured learning srategy. Students are taught specific skills in order to work well together in a group, such as explaining to other students, the opinions of friends, discussed regularly, students who have a good ability can help other , etc. Simple Present Tense (simple present time) is a pattern of sentences that describe events that occurred in the present in the simple form ofactivity or behavior which is done gradually or habitual action such as daily activity, or events or acts that have nothing to do with time. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is significant differences of Simple Present Tense Mastery of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP NU Assalam Nalumsari Jepara years 2009/2010 before and after being taught by using cooperative Learning Approach and STAD method. This study concluded that the use of Cooperative Learning Approach and STAD methodcan improve the mastery of simple present tense of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP NU VII Assalam Nalumsari Jepara in Academic Years2009/2010, therefore the authors recommend for teachers to use this approach in teaching the same material to enhance student understanding.
