Abstrak

Frequency of watching English TV program is the activity of the students in watching English TV programs at home. Vocabulary mastery is the mastery of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 in antonym and synonym of the short text. Students’ frequency in watching English TV programs can influence to students’ vocabulary mastery. The purpose of this research to find out the correlation between frequency of Watching English TV programs and Vocabulary Mastery of the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Muhammadiyah Kudus in the Academic Year 2013/2014. This research is a correlation research which can be categorized into descriptive quantitative research. Variable X is frequency of watching English TV programs, and Variable Y is vocabulary mastery. Then, the data are analyzed by using Pearson Correlation Product Moment Formula to know the correlation between frequency of watching English TV programs and vocabulary mastery. The result of the research shows that: the frequency of watching English TV programs of the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Muhammadiyah Kudus in the Academic Year 2013/2014 is fair (the mean is 45.11). On the other hand vocabulary mastery of the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Muhammadiyah Kudus in the Academic Year 2013/2014 is poor (the mean is 38.17). From the calculation, it is found the coefficient correlation between frequency of watching English TV programs and vocabulary mastery is 0.58. Which is categorized medium correlation, in the level of significance 5% and N=35 the critical value is 0.334. It is shown that rxy = 0.58 > rtable 0.05 (35) = 0.334, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is confirmed, because the coefficient of rxy is higher than the coefficient on the table of critical value. This research comes to the conclusion that the correlation between frequency of watching English TV programs and vocabulary mastery of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Kudus is significant. Thus, I suggest that English TV programs can be alternative media to learning English. The students should keep studying so that students can improve their English ability. It is also possible for those who want to make further analysis of frequency of watching English TV programs and vocabulary mastery to obtain detailed information.
