Abstrak

Learning styles is the behaviour used by individual in learning something. Every people have different learning styles that reflected in different behaviour, skills, and interest in learning something. Learning styles can be classified into: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, group, and individual. In learning English know what is the learning style of every individual is needed to support the student’s learning to be more effective. This objectives of this research are; (1) to know what is the learning styles in learning English used by male students students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus in academic year 2013/2014, (2) to know what is the learning styles in learning English used by female students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus in academic year 2013/2014, (3) to identify the differences and similarities of learning styles in learning English used by male and female students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. This research applies descriptive qualitative research, aimed at describing the learning styles of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus. The subjects of this study are 37 students; consist of 21 male students and 16 female students. The data were taken using Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP) questionnaire, designed by Joy M. Reid. Every number of learning styles is classified into three categories, namely: major, minor, and negligible learning style preferences. The result of this research shows that there are: (1) The learning styles in learning English of male students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 are kinesthetic (39.33), auditory and group (38.67) is a major learning styles preference and visual (37.23), tactile (37.04) and individual (32) is a minor learning styles preference. (2) The learning style in learning English of female students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 are visual (36.5), tactile (33.87), auditory (36.87), kinesthetic (36.25), group (34.87) and individual (33.62) are minor learning styles preference. (3) The differences of male and female students learning styles is male students have major learning style preference (kinesthetic, auditory, and group learning styles) to learn English, whereas the female students have no major learning styles preference and then the similarities of male and female students of tenth grade students of SMK NU MA’ARIF Kudus are visual, tactile, and individual learning styles is the minor learning style preference and both of them have no negligible learning styles preference. From this research, it can be concluded that every student have different learning styles and learns based on their own learning styles. In suggestions, for the teachers, they can help students in understanding their learning styles. For the male students should to learn using their learning style preferred and the female students prefer to choose the major learning style to be their learning style preferred. And for the next researchers can analyze with other measurements and the other model of learning styles to measure students’ learning style.
