Abstrak

Writing is one of four language skills that should be taught to the students. This skill should be mastered by the students because it can be used to express the student’s ideas as well as feelings, and to communicate with others. In Senior High School curriculum, writing is one of competence standards conducted to the students. There are some materials of writing English text that is taught at SMA N 3 Pati, one of them is narrative text. Most of the students say that writing is difficult and so many kinds of texts must be learned by them. Narrative text is a text that is retelling past events for the purpose to amuse or entertain the readers. It is difficult enough for students, especially for the eleventh grade students of SMA N 3 Pati. Using scaffolding technique and puppet media in teaching and learning process is expected to stimulate the students’ interest in composing a text. Scaffolding technique is an instructional technique to build on prior knowledge of the students, and puppet media is a tool or a media used by the teacher to make the students interested to learn English. The objective of this research isto improve the ability of writing in narrative text by using scaffolding technique and puppet media for the eleventh grade students of science program in SMA N 3 Pati in academic year 2013/2014. The research applied a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It is one of the kind of research that is done by the teacher in the class. It consists of four stages. These are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research is the eleventh grade students of XI- IPA 3 of SMA N 3 Pati in academic year 2013/2014. The data of this research was taken from the result of writing test. In cycle 1, the average score of the writing ability in narratuve text is 73, 94 as good category with 18 (50%) students who reach KKM. In cycle 2, the average score of writing ability in narrative text is 84, 22 as excellent category with 36 (100%) who could reach the KKM. Based on the result, it can beconcluded that the scaffolding technique and puppet media can improve the ability of writing in narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 3 Pati in academic year 2013/2014. Thus, I suggest that a teacher should be creative, active, always give motivation and support to the students also may modify this technique and media in such a way so that it will be appropriate in teaching and learning process
