Abstrak
Writing is one of the four language skills that include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is an activity that combines words to form meaningful messages that the writer wants to express. In Senior High School curriculum, writing is one of the standart competence to the students. There are some materials of writing English text that is taught at SMA N 2 Bae Kudus, one of them is narrative text. The fact shows that the teacher does not use media well to the students. So, the students still difficulties to explore their ideas. Video clips as teaching learning media to teach how to write a good narrative text more interestingly because the students can listen to the music and enjoy the video clips that contains the story. The objective of the research is to find out whether there is asignificant difference between the ability of writing narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014before and after being taught by using video clips. The design of this research is a quasi-experimental research which used pre-test and post-test through written tests. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. As the subject in this research which consist of 301 students and the sample of this research was class XI science 1. The data of this research was taken from the result of writing test. The result of pre-test was categorized as suffficient. The score of mean and standard deviation were 57.14 and 9.10. Meanwhile, the result of post-test was categorized as good. The score of mean and standard deviation were 76.89 and 5.16. The calculation of t-test got result ±12.99 with the level of significance 0.05 and (df) was 27 which was gained N-1. T-table was ±0.052. This research comes to the conclusion that there is asignificant difference between the ability of writing narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Bae Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014before and after being taught by using video clips. Thus, the writer suggests that the English teacher should be creative, active, and innovative in selected the suitable media in teaching learning process. Video clips can be used as appropriate media to teach writing narrative text and other text.
